Four-millimeter bands cut from yellow masking paper. The width for bold stripes, the borders of large insignia and the boundary lines of extensive fields.
Responsibility details are not available.
Four millimeters is no longer a line but a stripe. In 1:48 scale it corresponds to almost twenty centimeters in reality, which is the dimension of invasion stripes, of wide bands around a fuselage or of the borders of large national insignia. On armored vehicles the boundaries of camouflage fields are defined with them; on ship models, the band above the waterline. A wide band has one advantage over a thin one: it holds its direction by itself and does not curl when you lead it over a longer distance.
If you want two lines side by side at the same spacing, you do not have to measure. Lay the first strip, put a second beside it as a spacer and place a third on the other side of it. Then remove the middle one and you are left with two masks exactly four millimeters apart. The same trick lets you measure out the gap between repeating stripes without laying a ruler on the model.
A wide mask tempts you to press it all down with your palm. It is better to lead the pressure along the axis from one end to the other, or an air pocket will be closed in the middle and the edge will lift. After spraying, check whether a ridge of dried paint has formed at the edge: if so, run the point of a knife along it carefully before you remove the mask, so that the varnish does not tear across the edge.
The manufacturer supplies the same width in a white film rendition as well. Paper is more pliable and tears across more easily, while film does not let thinner through and takes wet handling. For the ordinary painting of a kit the paper variant tends to be more comfortable.
