About product

Transparent yellow for glazes and lights

A transparent medium works differently from a covering paint. It does not hide what is under it but colors it, as though a sheet of tinted glass had been laid over the surface. The result therefore always depends on what you painted beforehand, and that property makes it a tool for effects that covering shades cannot produce.

Metal is transformed. Over a silver base it gives brass or a golden metal, over copper a warmer bronze. This is exactly how the heads of cartridge cases, ornamental fittings, brass tubes or the shiny parts of period instruments are done, without reaching for a gold paint.

Light from a source: for the effect of a lit area around a lamp, a fire or a reactor, it pays to lay it on in many very thin coats. Each further one strengthens the shade, so the intensity can be graded smoothly by the distance from the source. It is always easier to add a coat than to take one away.

Transparent parts: on clear plastic it serves to tint warning beacons and landing lights. Lay it on from the inside of the part, and the outside stays smooth with no visible strokes.

What not to expect: on a dark surface it will show practically nothing. If you need a bright yellow area, lay white or light yellow underneath first, and only then will the shade light up.

Combining with other glazes: overlaid with orange it gives amber, overlaid with green a fresh shade of young foliage. The coats add up, so the result is always darker than any single component, which has to be allowed for when planning.

Looking after the bottle: wipe the neck after use. Dried glaze around the cap crumbles, and its flakes then end up in the middle of a smooth surface.

FAQ

Lay one or two thin coats of this transparent tone onto the dry metal base. The metallic shine is kept and the shade shifts toward brass or gold.

A transparent medium only tones what is underneath. For the yellow to tell, there has to be white or a very light coat under it, or a dark surface will swallow it.

Work in many very thin coats and grade the intensity toward the source. Adding another coat is always easier than removing one that is too heavy.
