A styrene profile with a U-shaped section 6.0 mm wide and 350 mm long, in a pack of 3 pieces. It is a building raw material, not a part of a particular kit. Against the narrower four-millimeter version of the same range it will take a greater load and suits places where a structure should look more robust — beams, frame side members, larger channels and runs.

What the profile is for

A U channel is used for building frames and superstructures, for making beams and side members, for adding elements missing from older kits, for the structures of buildings and industrial works on a diorama and for a hidden stiffener inside larger parts, so that they do not warp. Styrene behaves just like the plastic of ordinary injection-molded models, so it is cut, sanded, heat-formed and bonded with the usual means.

Tips for the work

• Use a sharp knife or a fine saw to cut to length; a coarse-toothed saw will fray the edge.
• Liquid cement for polystyrene flows into the joint by capillary action and gives a stronger joint than super glue.
• True the cut edges on abrasive paper, so that the part sits down over its whole face.
• Glue longer straight assemblies against a ruler or a square, otherwise the structure will warp.
• On smooth styrene paint holds poorly without a primer — degrease and prime the surface.
