Dry dust does not fall on a vehicle evenly. It comes down from above and stays where nothing sweeps it away: on the upper armor, on the mudguards, in the corners between the superstructure and the hull, on the horizontal ribs of covers. This olive tone designated by the number 319 is a rewarding base for such work, because a matte surface takes the dust and lets it come through, whereas on a glossy surface it would be lost.

Where dust settles first

• Horizontal surfaces: roofs, hatches, platforms, the upper edges of tanks.
• Joints and sharp transitions, where the wind blows grime in and the rain does not wash it out.
• Around rivets, grab handles and brackets, where dust has something to catch on.
• Sheltered places under overhangs, which stay calm even on the move.

How to work with the shade

Apply the olive tone first as a continuous ground and only then deal with the soiling. The same shade also serves in the opposite direction, though: when there is too much dust, it can be used to open up again an area that is meant to stay visible. The surroundings of hatches, the places the crew treads every day, the edges that hands and equipment rub against. Alternating dusty and freshly uncovered areas is what gives the surface depth.
