About product

Finnish WWII Army Harmaa N: 01 Grey

Harmaa is simply gray in Finnish, and in the Finnish army coding of the period it carries the number 01. The shade was therefore created for Finnish vehicles and artillery of the Second World War, but its usefulness reaches further. A neutral gray with neither a blue nor a brown cast is the best starting tone for everything that is meant to look like steel on a model and yet is not meant to be glossy.

Polished metal on the running gear

The running gear is where the impression of metal either comes off or falls apart. The wheels, the idler wheel and the faces of the track the vehicle rides on are polished in service into a cold light tone that black comes nowhere near. A neutral gray captures such a burnished plate better than black and better than silver: applied in a thin layer with an almost dry brush over a darker base, it lifts only the highest points, and exactly that impression of a surface rubbing against the ground appears.

What to reach for

  • Finnish vehicles, guns and equipment of the Second World War.
  • Wheels, rollers and the polished faces of the running gear.
  • Steel parts of tools, tow cables, hooks and brackets on the bed.
  • Mild brightening of darker field shades without a shift into warm tones.

Who it is for

For the modeler building Finnish vehicles, and equally for anyone dealing with metal details on any vehicle at all. Reckon with the gray reacting to the ground more sensitively than rich colors do: on a glossy smooth base it appears darker and cooler, on a matte grainy surface lighter and softer. That very property can be used when one and the same gray is to create two different metals on a model.

Keep out of the reach of children. Ensure ventilation when working with an airbrush and protect your airways.

FAQ

Harmaa is the Finnish word for gray, and the number 01 refers to the Finnish army coding of shades of the period. The English Grey in the name is its translation.

Polished plate is in fact light and cold, not black, and silver looks like new chrome in a small scale. A neutral gray lies between the two and reads more convincingly.

No. Historically it belongs to the Finnish army palette, but as a neutral gray it serves on the steel details of any vehicle, gun or piece of equipment.
