The hand-launched Vosa H glider from the insect range by Hiesbök. No engine, no transmitter: the whole flight depends on the strength of the throw and on accurate trimming.
Responsibility details are not available.
Vosa H belongs among the hand-launched gliders to which Hiesbök gave names after flying insects. In the same family stand Vcelka, Srsen, Komar and Mravenec. A hand-launched glider is the simplest flying model of all: it has no powerplant, no propeller and no radio control. All its energy comes from a single movement of the arm, and everything else is settled by the shape of the lifting surface and the position of the center of gravity.
Hold the fuselage just behind the leading edge and launch it upward at an angle, definitely not level. Above the top of its path the glider settles itself into a gliding flight, and it is exactly the smoothness of that transition that separates a good throw from a bad one. There are two ways to trim it: weight in the nose, which moves the center of gravity forward, and a slight bend of the elevator or the rudder. A few tenths of a gram of lead in the nose will do more for a four-second flight than an hour of sanding the airfoil.
The best conditions come on a windless morning or evening over a grassy area with no trees and no wires. In a light breeze you throw into the wind, or the model will roll onto its back. Calm air helps to reveal whether the glider is turning a steady circle or sinking along a straight line, and the elevator is adjusted accordingly. In modeling clubs hand-launched gliders are traditionally used as the first step, before powered models and before radio: the build takes little time, a mistake costs nothing and the response comes at once, because the model either glides or it does not.
