Four paints plus a brush for the non-metallic metal technique. The set is put together for gold: from a deep red-black shadow to an ivory highlight.

The technique known by the abbreviation NMM rests on a simple idea: the sheen of metal is not pretended with a metallic pigment but drawn. The painter builds a hard transition on the surface from an almost black shadow to a light bordering on white, and the eye supplies the rest. On miniatures it is the cleanest way to bring plate armor, a sword hilt or a reliquary to a state where a photograph does not lose contrast and the surface holds its shape even under a harsh spotlight.
This set of four is put together for a warm gold. Black Red forms the deepest shadow, British Khaki the midtone, Volcanic Yellow the depth of the gold and Ivory the sharp highlight. A brush is included in the package, so you do not have to buy another tool just to try a new technique.
First work out where the light falls from, and only then paint. The surface divides into two zones: the lower one reflects the ground and is warmer, the upper one reflects the sky and is cooler. The transition between them should be sharper than would feel natural, because it is exactly the hardness of the transition that the eye reads as metal. Apply the ivory highlight sparingly, on edges and points, never across an area.
The paints cover well, so edges will take even a thin coat and the detail does not get clogged.
