Tamiya XF-51 Khaki Drab (Enamel), 10 ml

A modeling paint, not a kit. It is a synthetic Tamiya enamel (solvent-based) paint from the XF range, that is a flat one, because at Tamiya the letters XF in a designation mean a flat finish. The bottle holds 10 ml. Khaki Drab is a muted green-brown khaki; the manufacturer gives it as suitable for painting American and Soviet soldiers.

Take care not to confuse it: Tamiya carries the same shade numbers in the enamel and acrylic ranges alongside each other. This paint is the enamel, thinned with X-20 thinner (without the letter A). The acrylic version is thinned with X-20A. The thinners are not interchangeable and mixing them up will ruin the paint.

Use

• The uniforms of soldiers: the manufacturer recommends the shade for American and Soviet figures.
• Military vehicles and gear in muted khaki tones; packs, tarpaulins, bags, diorama accessories.
• A base coat from which shading and highlighting are then built; the flat surface takes washes and pigments well.
• With an airbrush and with a brush. For spraying the manufacturer gives 2 parts thinner to 10 parts paint.
• Apply a gloss intermediate coat under decals, because a decal laid straight onto a flat surface creates a white veil (silvering). Choose a varnish compatible with enamels; aggressive lacquer (cellulose) varnishes are not recommended over enamel.

Who it is for

For modelers of military vehicles, figures and dioramas who need a dependable flat khaki with good coverage. Enamel paints close up more slowly and are pleasant to work with using a brush on the small areas of uniforms and gear.

Safety: flammable. It irritates the airways, so use it only in well ventilated spaces and use respiratory protection when spraying (a respirator). Keep out of the reach of children. Keep away from open flames and sources of ignition.
