About product

Tamiya XF-70 Dark Green 2, enamel paint, 10 ml, matte

This is a modeling paint, not a kit. Specifically, it is an enamel, that is, a solvent-based (synthetic) paint from Tamiya in a bottle with a volume of 10 ml. The XF range means a matte surface. The shade Dark Green 2 is a saturated dark green; the manufacturer lists it as the color for the aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) from the late phase of the Second World War. The numeral 2 in the name distinguishes this dark green from the other greens in the palette: it is not a German tank green but a Japanese aircraft shade.

Enamel, not acrylic: X-20 thinner

This version of XF-70 is an enamel and is thinned with X-20 enamel thinner (without the letter A). The shade XF-70 also exists in the acrylic range, which is water-thinnable and is used with X-20A. So check that you have the range you want, as the thinners cannot be swapped. For spraying, the manufacturer recommends about 2 parts thinner to 10 parts paint.

Use

  • The upper camouflage surfaces of Japanese naval aircraft from the end of the Second World War.
  • Dark green areas of military vehicles, where a saturated green with no leaning toward blue is wanted.
  • The airbrush for even coverage of large areas, a brush for details and touch-ups.
  • A base for modulation: lightening the panels and a wash in the panel lines give the surface depth.
  • Apply a gloss varnish under the decals, one compatible with enamels; a matte surface would cause the edges of the decals to lighten. Never spray lacquer paints over enamel.

Who it is for

For aircraft modelers building Japanese subjects of the Second World War who work with enamel paints and appreciate their longer working time and smooth flow. Stir the bottle thoroughly before use, the pigment settles at the bottom.

Safety: flammable. It irritates the airways: work in a well-ventilated area and use respiratory protection when spraying. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

It is an enamel, a solvent-based (synthetic) paint thinned with X-20 thinner. The shade XF-70 is also sold in the acrylic range (water-thinnable, thinner X-20A). The same number, a different range, so take care over what you are buying.

The numeral 2 in the name distinguishes this particular shade from the other greens in the palette. The manufacturer intends it for the aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy from the late phase of the Second World War, so it is neither a German tank green nor a general army green.

Yes. The prefix XF on Tamiya paints means a matte (flat) surface. So apply a gloss varnish compatible with enamels under the decals first.

With X-20 enamel thinner. The manufacturer recommends adding about 2 parts thinner to 10 parts paint. Spray with good ventilation and with respiratory protection.
