About product

Tamiya XF-91 IJN Grey, acrylic flat, 10 ml

It is a modeling paint, not a kit. The shade belongs to the Tamiya acrylic range, specifically to the flat XF range (with Tamiya: X = gloss, XF = flat). The bottle holds 10 ml. It is thinned with X-20A thinner, which is meant for acrylics - do not confuse it with X-20 without the letter A, which is for enamels. Tamiya carries the same shade numbers in the acrylic and the enamel range, so the two are easily mixed up. The paint suits brush and airbrush alike; while it is still wet it can be washed off with water.

What IJN Grey is - and what it is not

IJN stands for the Imperial Japanese Navy, and this shade is a SHIP gray - the color of the hulls and superstructures of Japanese warships. It is not an aircraft color. The Japanese naval arsenals mixed their grays themselves to their own recipes, so the shades differed slightly between arsenals; Tamiya therefore offers several different IJN grays for the individual arsenals, and this particular shade matches the Yokosuka arsenal. For a faithful model it makes sense to choose the gray according to where the ship was built or last docked.

Do not confuse it with XF-12 J.N. Grey - that is the light gray of the undersurfaces of Japanese naval AIRCRAFT, a completely different use and a different shade. If you are building a Japanese naval aircraft, you need XF-12, not XF-91. If you are building a Japanese warship, it is the other way round.

Use

  • Hulls and superstructures of Japanese warships of the Second World War - the Yokosuka arsenal.
  • Accessories, boats, armament and details of ship models in the same gray.
  • A base for washes, dry-brushing and weathering - the flat finish is ideal for that.
  • Optionally as a general naval gray for dioramas and models.

Who the paint is for

For ship modelers who build Japanese naval subjects and want a shade matching a particular arsenal, and for anyone who works with Tamiya acrylics and needs a flat gray. Stir the paint thoroughly before use, the pigment settles.

An acrylic paint thinnable with X-20A thinner. When spraying with an airbrush, make sure of ventilation and protect your airways. Keep out of the reach of children. The volume and the shade match the manufacturer's data.

FAQ

For ships. IJN stands for the Imperial Japanese Navy and this shade is the ship gray for the hulls and superstructures of Japanese warships. For the undersurfaces of Japanese naval aircraft a different shade is used, XF-12 J.N. Grey - do not confuse them.

To the Yokosuka arsenal. The Japanese naval arsenals mixed their grays to their own recipes, so the shades differed slightly. That is why Tamiya offers several different IJN grays by arsenal - choose according to where your ship was built or docked.

X-20A thinner, which is meant for acrylic paints. Watch out for confusion with X-20 thinner without the letter A, which is for enamel paints. Tamiya carries the same shade numbers in the acrylic and the enamel range, so it is always worth checking which range you are holding.

With Tamiya, X marks the gloss range and XF the flat range. XF-91 is therefore a flat shade, which is an advantage on a ship model - a flat finish is an ideal base for washes, dry-brushing and weathering.
