A 1:144 decal set with Grumpy, the witch and the fuselage painting of Snow White herself with the seven dwarfs.
Responsibility details are not available.
This sheet closes the trio devoted to the best-known fairy-tale set of the American bomber force. Besides the machine with the number 41-11825, which carried the name Grumpy, and the aircraft 41-11840 with the witch, there is also the flagship painting of the whole set: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It appeared on two different airframes, 41-11913 and 42-40364, so the modeler chooses between two versions of the same artwork.
The paintings came about on machines that set out on long flights over the Mediterranean and the Balkans without fighter escort. For the crews the large, colorful designs had a clear purpose: they gave the airframe an identity at a time when losses were counted by squadrons. That is exactly why photographs have survived by which the artwork on a model can be lined up.
The reduction to 1:144 actually suits the fairy-tale designs. The model measures roughly twenty centimeters across the wings, fits into an ordinary display case, and the colorful nose is visible on it from across the room. Collectors who want to keep several machines of one unit together can, at this reduction, afford a whole formation for which there would be no room in larger scales.
The large fuselage painting is the most demanding item on the whole sheet at this scale, because it is laid across several panel lines at once. It pays to work in stages: dampen the area, lay the decal down and only then rid it of water with a soft cloth from the center toward the edges. Decal softener is applied only at the moment when the artwork is exactly in place, otherwise the film creases and cannot be moved.
The set belongs with kits of the four-engine B-24D at a reduction of 1:144. Paints, clear coats and plastic parts are not in it.
