A set of photo-etched metal parts in 1:144 scale intended to improve the exterior of a model of the Ilyushin Il-86 wide-body airliner. It is not a kit of the aircraft and not decals - it is an accessory that replaces simplified plastic features with thin metal parts. The word Exterior says that the set is aimed at the outside of the model, not at the cabin interior.
In 1:144 scale every plastic part is necessarily thicker than reality would call for - fine features on the surface of an aircraft simply cannot be molded in plastic. Photo-etched metal sheet, by contrast, is thin to the limit of visibility, so small details look correct at scale. On airliners the effect shows above all from the side and on the smooth surfaces of the fuselage, where crisp metal features stand out markedly from the soft shapes of plastic.
Cut the parts off the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard support, and never break them out - they deform. Clean and degrease the contact area; photo-etch is bonded with super glue applied in the smallest possible amount, ideally on the tip of a toothpick. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two blades, so that the edge is crisp and straight. Before painting apply a primer intended for metal, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface and will flake off during handling. Fit the smallest features at the very end of the build, when you will no longer be turning the model over.
