A set of five Soviet tracked vehicles in 1:144: the T-34/85 medium tank and the SU-122 self-propelled gun in two versions, the SU-85 and the SU-100.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set brings together machines that share an origin. The basis of them all is the running gear of the T-34 medium tank, on which the Red Army built a whole family of self-propelled guns. First came the SU-122 with a 122 mm howitzer, meant for breaking up fortified positions, then the SU-85 with a gun that could deal with German armor, and finally the SU-100 with the hundred, the most effective Soviet tank destroyer of its day. The T-34/85 itself is then the version of the tank with a turret for the 85 mm gun and a three-man crew.
In 1:144 scale a tank measures a little over five centimeters. That has a practical consequence: a whole formation fits on a board the size of a sheet of paper, together with terrain, a road and buildings, whereas in larger reductions a single machine would fill it. A set of five vehicles therefore adds up to a scene rather than a single item, and it suits anyone who wants to show a unit advancing, the firing position of a battery or a column on the move.
The self-propelled guns differ from the tank in having a low casemate superstructure with no turret, so even in a small scale they are told apart at a glance. It is a good idea to arrange them so that the difference shows: the low hulls in the second rank, the rotating turret at the front. A small reduction forgives detail but is merciless to the silhouette and to color matching, and that is exactly what it pays to concentrate on. It helps to unify the shade of the tracks and the dusting of the running gear so that the five read as one whole that came along the same road.
