According to the name, the set contains 176 turned metal pins for joining the track links of a model of the Panther tank in 1:16 scale. It is not a kit and not the track links themselves but the fastenings with which the links are joined into a continuous, flexible track. In the large 1:16 scale a track is assembled from individual pieces and the pin passes through the eye of the neighboring link exactly as on the real machine, so the result can be tensioned, allowed to sag and taken off again. The material, the diameter and the length of the pin are given on the packaging.
On large tracks the fastening takes the most strain. A plastic pin deforms over time, bends when the track is tensioned and cracks under repeated handling, which means a track parted in the middle of a displayed model. A turned metal pin holds its shape, takes the weight of the track and of the model and makes it possible to take the track apart and join it up again several times, for example for painting or to adjust the sag. A set with a high number of pieces also deals with the inevitable losses: small pins drop during assembly and are hard to find, so a spare supply is a practical necessity.
Work over a support with a raised edge or over a cloth so that a pin that jumps away can be found. Run a drill of the matching diameter through the holes in the links beforehand, as plastic tends to be narrowed after molding and the pin would have to be forced. Push the pins in with fine-jawed tweezers and trim the protruding end with side cutters only once it is in place. Assemble the track in shorter sections and join the finished sections only afterwards; assembling a whole track in one go is impractical. We recommend painting only after assembly and after checking the sag, otherwise the paint rubs off in the joints. Degrease the metal pins before painting and use a primer for metal.
