A decal sheet for the Bell Airacobra Mk.I in 1:32 scale. Six machines of the single Royal Air Force squadron that used the type operationally, autumn 1941.
Responsibility details are not available.
In its day the Airacobra was a machine full of unusual solutions. The engine sat in the middle of the fuselage behind the pilot, and a long shaft ran to the propeller under the floor of the cockpit, which was entered through a door in the manner of a car. The nose thus stayed free for a cannon firing through the propeller hub and for nose landing gear, at the time still rare on fighters. In combat at altitude over England the aircraft fell behind, though, and the Royal Air Force did not keep it for long.
The type was used operationally by a single squadron, which took it over in the summer of 1941 and in the spring of the following year re-equipped with Spitfires. During those few months it moved between three airfields and managed only a handful of attacks on targets on the French coast. A whole series of Czechoslovak airmen served among its pilots, and it is precisely their machines that form the core of this sheet.
The sheet contains six complete color schemes from the autumn of 1941; for each one the squadron, the name of the pilot, the rank and the airfield are given. Beside the Czechoslovak names there is also the machine of a commander of British origin on the sheet.
It is exactly for this reason that the sheet in 1:32 scale is rewarding. The large format will carry both the national insignia and the small personal markings that merge into a smudge on a smaller model. With machines with a short operational career the documentation also tends to be rare, so the individual variants differ from one another more than is usual with types deployed in series.
These are decals. Plastic parts, putty and paints are not included in the package and the kit has to be obtained separately. Before applying them it pays to polish the surface and lay down a gloss clear coat, so that no air pockets form under a decal; a matte overcoat at the end then erases the difference between the carrier film and the paintwork completely.
