Markings for one specific Lancaster with a mouse painted on the nose. The codes of No. 97 Squadron, the station of Bourn, the year 1944, scale 1:32.
Responsibility details are not available.
Serial number EE176 is known today even to people who take no interest in British bombers. On the left side of the nose this machine had a figure of a mouse in a top hat with a cigar, completed with the name Mickey The Moocher. Raid after raid, bomb symbols were added beneath it in several rows and the aircraft worked its way into the handful of Lancasters that managed an exceptionally long operational career. The appearance on the sheet matches the time when it carried the codes OF with No. 97 Squadron at the station of Bourn in Cambridgeshire, that is 1944.
No. 97 Squadron belonged to the Pathfinder Force. Its crews arrived over the target ahead of the main wave and lit it with colored markers, so they moved in the most dangerous space of the whole operation. That is exactly why the nose of this aircraft has so many painted symbols.
First the large codes and national insignia go on the fuselage, then the small lettering and finally the bomb record, which is applied row by row. Anyone who cuts the whole block of symbols out in one piece usually shifts it out of position on the curved side. Let the base dry overnight after every layer. The lower surfaces of a night bomber are covered in deep black, on which every light patch of glue gives itself away, so work on it with the smallest possible amount of water.
The set holds printing for one specific machine only; the plastic subject is a separate purchase. Anyone building a whole series of machines of one squadron will appreciate that the size of the letters matches the regulations of the period, so codes from different sheets do not clash with each other.
