After the armistice was declared in the autumn of 1943, an air arm was formed in northern Italy that took over precisely this version of the Messerschmitt from Germany. Its fighter groups defended Turin, Milan and industrial targets in the Po Valley against American daylight formations and flew until April 1945. The pilots came from experienced prewar units, so even with foreign equipment they were opponents to be reckoned with.
The appearance of these aircraft is exceptionally rewarding for a modeler. The German finish with two gray shades on the upper surfaces and a light blue underside remained the basis, but Italian insignia replaced the crosses on the wings and fuselage, and various forms of the group marking appeared on the fin. Some examples still carried remnants of the original German insignia, only roughly covered over with paint. The two insignia masks in the set match this limited extent.
The side panel of the canopy on this version is curved and tape breaks in the bend when masking by hand, so this is where the film saves the most time. The insignia are sprayed only once the camouflage has dried, and it is recommended to try them on a piece of plastic first, because the Italian color is more saturated than the German one.
Anyone who wants to capture the transitional period can let the outline of the German cross show through beneath the Italian insignia. It is enough to spray it first and then go over it lightly with the shade of the surrounding camouflage.
