Decals for two Mustangs of the 357th Fighter Group of the Eighth Air Force: Daisy Mae with the code B6-R and Temptation with the code G4-N.
Responsibility details are not available.
The sheet in 1:32 scale carries the markings of two North American P-51D machines of the 357th Fighter Group of the Eighth Air Force. The group entered the fighting at the beginning of 1944 from Leiston in England and was the first formation of the Eighth to be equipped exclusively with Mustangs. A neighboring village earned it the nickname Yoxford Boys and by the end of the war it was among the most successful fighter units over Europe.
The first motif belongs to the aircraft with serial number 44-14519 and the code B6-R, named Daisy Mae, flown by Allen K. Abner. The second is P-51D-10-NA 44-14722 with the code G4-N and the name Temptation of Lieutenant Matthew S. Martin. The pair of letters before the hyphen denotes the squadron, so the two aircraft come from different parts of the same unit; the single letter after the hyphen is the individual marking of a particular machine.
The base has to be smooth and glossy, otherwise air is trapped under the film and the edges of the motif turn white. Applying gloss varnish, letting it cure properly and only then reaching for water proves itself. In this scale the large fuselage codes are best moved into place in small steps with a damp brush, so that the film does not fold over.
Both aircraft flew in unpainted duralumin with prominent color elements on the engine cowling and on the rudder, so the finish of the model has as much influence on the final impression as the markings themselves. The large scale also lets even the small lettering around the cockpit stand out, which in smaller scales would merge together.
