This advertising board (Werbetafel) with the German inscriptions Angebote (offers) and Waren (goods) from the manufacturer MAiM is a classic shop sign for 1:35 scale. Boards like this invited customers into shops, general stores and department stores, and in a diorama they mark a building at once as a working, or once working, shop.
You place the sign on a shop frontage, beside a display window or on the pavement as an A-frame. The natural setting is German and Central European urban scenes of various periods; the trade texts are timeless, so the board holds up from historical lanes to the recent past. Combined with the other billboards of the MAiM range, a cinema, notice boards, an opening hours sign, you can put together a shopping street with a rhythm of its own. In a ruin scene a chipped Waren sign on an empty shop then tells its own tale.
Once cleaned up and primed, choose livelier colors for a shop sign, because a shopkeeper wanted to be seen. An enameled gloss is supported by a drop of gloss clear, while aging comes from faded areas, small chipping of the edges with a sponge and rust streaks from the mounts. Dust from pigments along the bottom edge will settle the board into the scene.
