A set of photo-etched side skirts in 1:35 scale for a model of the Israeli Merkava Mk.IV main battle tank, in the form designated as type 1. The side skirts are one of the most prominent visible areas on the Merkava and in plastic they tend to be too thick. A metal replacement gives the parts a scale thickness and makes it possible to lean the individual segments or to suggest that they are bent, which on a vehicle in service looks more believable than a perfectly straight line. It is not a kit of the tank but an accessory.
The Merkava Mk.IV is an Israeli main battle tank whose whole concept is subordinated to the protection of the crew. The powerplant is placed at the front and forms an additional barrier, while the rear part of the hull has its own entrance and a space usable for carrying or evacuating. The main armament is a 120 millimeter smoothbore gun. The side of the running gear is covered by skirts, which exist in several forms, and that is exactly why makers offer different sets according to the type.
Cut the original plastic skirts off and sand the surface, so that the metal replacement seats along its whole length. Straighten the segments on glass and make the bends in a bending tool. Degrease the metal and glue it in spots with cyanoacrylate glue, and on long edges preferably with epoxy. A base coat for metal is essential. Israeli equipment is painted in a characteristic grayish sand shade, on which every flaw in the base shows, so prepare the surface carefully. The skirts are very dusty and scuffed in service: light dust in the lower part and wear on the edges are the most prominent element of weathering on this vehicle.
