About product

Mikromir 1:35 Japan Type 93 torpedo - a kit

A kit of the Japanese Type 93 torpedo in 1:35 scale from the maker Mikromir. It is a model of the weapon itself, not of a vessel, and it is supplied unassembled and unpainted. In 1:35 scale, thanks to the large caliber of the subject, it comes out as a properly long piece that has enough presence on its own to stand as an exhibit in its own right.

The real subject

The Type 93 was a Japanese naval torpedo of 610 mm, that is, considerably larger than the standard 533 mm caliber then used by most other navies. Its peculiarity was propulsion using oxygen instead of compressed air, which besides a greater range also meant a markedly weaker visible track behind the run. The weapon was meant for the launching tubes of surface vessels, and its size carried over into the design of its carriers. Oxygen propulsion placed high demands on the cleanliness and maintenance of the whole system.

Building and painting tips

With a long cylindrical body the hardest thing is to keep the axis straight. Glue the halves on a flat surface and fix them with tape along the whole length, or a slight banana will arise that is noticeable from the side. Once it has cured, fill the longitudinal seams with a thin filler and sand along the axis, not across it; scratches across a cylinder cannot be masked. Before painting, wipe the surface with a degreaser and apply a thin base; larger gloss areas are unforgiving of grease from the fingers. To tell the sections apart use shades with the same sheen but a different saturation, and keep the transitions sharp, for example with masking tape. Toward the end fit the propellers and check that their axes lie in one line with the body. The model looks good on a simple wooden base or on a modeled transport trolley.

Who the model is for

  • anyone interested in naval armament of the Second World War
  • builders of dioramas with the transport and handling of ammunition
  • modelers who want a striking and unconventional piece for a display case
  • those who want to try a long smooth cylindrical surface

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. The subject of the kit is the torpedo alone. Neither a carrier nor a launching tube is included in the package.

It had a caliber of 610 mm, that is, more than the 533 mm usual at the time, and its propulsion used oxygen instead of compressed air.

Glue it on a flat surface with tape fixing it along the whole length, fill it with a thin filler and sand along the axis, never across it.

Neither the number of parts nor the contents of the package is stated here.
