1:35 KIOSK MISSING PEOPLE

1:35 Kiosk Missing People – a printed accessory for an urban scene

A paper accessory for a diorama in 1:35 scale from ETA diorama. It is not a model or a decal: you get a printed sheet from which you cut the elements out and set them into a scene. The motif is an urban kiosk with notices about missing persons, that is an element for present-day urban and crisis scenes. The make-up of the sheet and its contents can be found on the packaging.

Credibility of scale and cutting

With urban elements the detail at scale decides everything: small notices are trimmed with a scalpel with a fresh blade, otherwise the edges of the paper fray and the poster then looks like a stuck-on scrap of paper rather than a sheet of paper in 1:35 scale. Make straight cuts against a metal rule, and do small internal cutouts on a cutting mat in two shallow strokes. For three-dimensional parts, back the print with thin card, so that the walls stand straight and the edges stay sharp.

Setting it into a diorama

Paper is glued with PVA or matte modeling glue; super glue often leaves a dark stain on a print. Fold the notices over an edge and lift them slightly at the corners, so that they look stuck up in the field rather than printed on. Darken the white cut edges with pastel, spray the whole with matte clear coat and add restrained weathering: a gray wash in the corners, dust pigment at the ground, a hint of curling and lifting on older notices. The scene only makes sense in combination with figures and small street fittings.
