A masking set for painting the road wheels of the American M113 armored personnel carrier in 1:35 scale. This is not a kit: the masks stick onto finished wheels and hold the edge between the rubber tire band and the rim while spraying. The set is cut for the M113 kit from AFV Club.
The M113 is among the subjects where the running gear is visible in full. The vehicle has no side plates or armor skirts to shade the wheels, so everything from the drive sprocket at the front to the idler wheel at the rear lies in plain sight. It also has no return rollers — the upper run of the track bears directly on the road wheels, which means their upper part is exposed from the side as well. The wheels themselves are flat, large in relation to the size of the vehicle and have a wide rubber tire band with a clearly legible border against the rim. Nothing can be hidden on an M113, then: every deviation in the width of the rubber, every bleed under a mask and every wheel painted a shade differently is spotted on a finished model from a meter away. The road wheels have an identical diameter, so the masks are interchangeable with one another.
On the M113 it is worth considering whether to reach for acrylic or for enamel. Acrylic dries faster on the wheels and, above all, harder, so it tears less when the mask is lifted and the edge stays sharper — and that is exactly what matters on a running gear this exposed. Enamel stays soft longer and a mask can drag it into a mark as it peels away. Whichever you choose, lay the paint on in two or three thin coats and let the last one dry thoroughly. Choose a medium-dark gray shade; on the wide tire band of an M113 pure black would swallow all the shadow and the wheel would look flat. Finish matte and leave any fine satin for the rim alone.
