The furnishings of a living room for a diorama interior. The set holds 41 resin parts, from the bed to the odds and ends on the nightstand.

A living room tends to be the strongest scene on a diorama, because the viewer sees into it only through a broken wall or an open door and imagines the rest. The scope of the set matches that, with 41 resin parts. Furniture of this appearance lasted decades in European households, so it suits scenes from the interwar period to the postwar years.
Smooth resin does not resemble wood on its own, the grain has to be painted. The basis is a lighter tone, over which, once dry, an oil paint is drawn with an almost dry flat brush, always in one direction, along the longer edge of the part. The grain must not be regular: let it thicken in one place, skip in another and curl at a knot. The surplus is drawn off with a clean brush. After two days of drying, the difference between a polished cabinet and a worn bed is created by nothing but the degree of sheen of the final varnish.
A made bed looks empty, a crumpled blanket lives. Textiles are imitated with a handkerchief soaked in diluted PVA glue and shaped with tweezers; once dry it holds its shape. Glass in a cabinet door is replaced by clear film glued on from the inside, and a mirror by a thin piece of self-adhesive aluminum foil.
An interior is viewed from above, so leave the upper surfaces lighter and the corners under the furniture darkened with a thinned dark shade. Dust in the corners is made with pigment poured onto a brush and tapped off into the room, not by rubbing it in.
