A group of twelve castings captures the light plastic drums that appeared in every supply yard from the middle of the last century. A metal fret for the small fittings and for the hoops, which would come out too heavy in a casting, is part of the package.
Responsibility details are not available.
Drums of molded plastic pushed the classic sheet-metal vessel out after the Second World War everywhere corrosion and weight were a nuisance. Their shape is therefore different: a smooth rounded shoulder, a thick-walled neck with a recessed closure and shallow ribs along the body that give the vessel its stiffness. It is exactly those ribs that make such a drum a rewarding object in a scene, because dirt catches on them and the whole surface stops reading as a bare cylinder.
The point of this set lies in the contradiction between what is depicted and what it is made of. A resin casting has no draft angles for release from the mold and no marks from ejector pins, so the edge around the bottom stays sharp and a rib keeps its full height. The price is paid in another property of the material: a casting is harder and more brittle, it does not melt with solvent cement and the joint holds with super glue or epoxy. The casting block is cut off with a saw, not with nippers, because the pressure of the jaws would chip a piece of wall out of the resin.
The fret deals with what casting cannot manage. A hoop or a grip at this scale comes out at tenths of a millimeter and in resin it would either not fill or would break at the first touch. A metal part carries a right angle and a genuinely thin edge, only it has to be degreased and primed before painting, or paint will not hold on the smooth surface.
The drums can be stacked on a pallet, laid on their side along a wall or left lying about singly. The difference between a new and a written-off piece is made with paint, not with shape, and a different shade of lid and a layer of dirt at the bottom are enough for it.
