A pre-cut masking set for painting the running gear of the Pz.Kpfw.IV medium tank in the Ausf.F version. It covers the rubber parts of the wheels, so you spray the rims in the base color of the vehicle and the tire bands stay in a dark shade. The set is cut for the kit of this tank from Tamiya.
The Pz.Kpfw.IV does not have interleaved wheels like the later German types, but eight small road wheels on each side, paired into four bogies sprung on leaf springs. Four return rollers run above them. That is a fundamental difference from the Panther or the Tiger: the wheels do not overlap and are easily accessible, but they are small, there are many of them and they are packed tightly side by side. A brush reaches the tire band of a small wheel less easily than the large wheel of a T-34, and eight identical rings per side have to look the same, or the mismatch is immediately visible in the view from the side. Do not forget the return rollers either, on which the rubber tire band is painted as well.
Small masks are better transferred with the point of a sharp scalpel or with tweezers than with fingers. Lay a mask on dry first, check that it is concentric with the rim and only then press it down with a blunt toothpick all the way around. Apply the paint in two or three very thin coats; one heavy coat accumulates at the edge of the mask on small wheels and leaves a visible ridge once it is lifted. Paint the wheels and the rollers away from the hull, while they can still be turned. Small imperfections on the tire band border can be leveled with a brush without worry on a running gear, and in the end dust and mud will unify them anyway.
Paints, glue and the kit are not included in the package.
