It is important to know what you are buying: this is not a model of a warship or of a part of one in a usual ship scale, but a standalone model of a gun turret, which is built and displayed as one whole. Thanks to the large scale the finished model comes out at an impressive size and stands up to a close look, because it carries detail that in small ship scales could not be rendered at all.
The AK-130 is a twin-barrel automatic naval gun system of 130 mm caliber, developed for large surface ships. Its task is fire against surface and coastal targets and, to a limited degree, defense against air targets as well; guidance is provided by a separate fire control system. Characteristic is the angular turret shaped into flat surfaces with a pair of barrels side by side and with a prominent housing beneath which the automatic ammunition feed is hidden. It is precisely that flat build of the turret that makes the model a rewarding object for painting and patina.
The large flat parts of the turret must not be glued in haste: lay them on a flat board, check the right angles and let the joints cure, or the surfaces will ripple. The seams on the surfaces have to be filled and sanded smooth, because on a uniform gray surface every gap shows. Glue the barrels on a common axis and check them by looking from the front against the light. Start the painting with a full base coat, and only then comes the naval gray; on a large area it pays to spray the middle of the panel a shade lighter, so that the surface does not look flat. There is no shortage of room for salt and rust in the form of light vertical traces from the drains and around the bolts. The model looks good on a simple base which suggests a deck, including hatches and railings.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
