A photo-etched metal set intended for refining the detail of a plastic model of the Russian 9A52-2 Smerch large-caliber rocket launcher in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the vehicle, but an aftermarket accessory. The photo-etched parts replace plastic items wherever injection-molded plastic is unconvincing for its thickness; on this type these are above all the grilles, the covers, the platforms and the access steps, the loops, the clamps, the guards and the fine equipment brackets on the chassis and on the launcher. The scope of the package follows the manufacturer's instructions.
The 9A52-2 Smerch is a Russian large-caliber rocket launcher on the chassis of a heavy off-road truck. The launcher carries a bundle of guide tubes for 300 mm rockets and is intended for area fire at long range, that is for destroying concentrated vehicles, firing positions and rear-area targets. The system is rounded out by a separate reloading truck with a crane, without which refilling the pack would be extraordinarily slow. The combination of a large wheeled chassis and a massive pack of tubes makes the subject a striking modeling object.
Cut the parts out with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, and never break them out. Make the folds along the marked score lines, best in a photo-etch bender. Fit the steps, the platforms and the guards only once the main plastic parts are in place, otherwise you risk bending them during handling. They are glued with thin cyanoacrylate, and on larger parts a slow-setting epoxy gives time for exact positioning. Degrease the metal before painting and lay down a primer. On wheeled vehicles it proves useful to weather from the bottom upwards, that is mud and dust on the chassis and the wheels first, and only then finer effects on the superstructure.
