An aid for painting, not a model. The templates mark out the rubber tire band of the road wheel, so you spray it with a sharp border instead of laboriously lining it with a brush. The set is cut for the MiniArt 35193 kit. We give the target kit deliberately, because a separate set is cut for the later modernized version and the wheels differ between the two.
The T-44 is a step from wartime to postwar design and that is seen best in the running gear. The spring suspension of its predecessor is gone and torsion bars have taken over, which showed outwardly in even spacing — on the T-34 there was a strikingly larger gap between the first and the second wheel, whereas here the wheels are spaced regularly and close together along the whole length. Five large road wheels on each side remain, and so does the solution with no return rollers: the upper run of the track bears directly on the wheels. Two things follow from that for masking. A large diameter means a wide unbroken tire band on which every unevenness of the line shows, and close spacing means that maneuvering between glued wheels is awkward both with a brush and with masks applied afterwards.
Ten large wheels is roughly an extra hour of work if you guide the tire bands by hand, and it usually means a few repairs too. You are therefore trading the template for an evening at the bench and for the certainty that both sides of the vehicle come out the same. It pays off most on a model you are not going to mud up — on this subject the large exposed wheels are the most prominent detail of the chassis. Conversely, when you know the running gear will disappear under dense dust and pigment, or when you are building a model quickly and with no claim to detail, you can do without it and nobody will notice the difference.
