About product

M10 Tank Destroyer photo-etched detail set 1:35 (E.T. Model)

The package holds photo-etched parts, that is parts etched out of thin sheet metal, intended to improve a plastic model of the American M10 tank destroyer in 1:35 scale. It is neither a model nor a kit. Photo-etched metal is used where injection-molded plastic is too thick for the scale: on the fenders and their flanges, the grilles, the loops, the tool brackets, the clamps and the small metal fittings. The result is a model on which the sheet-metal items look like sheet metal and not like a casting.

The real subject

The M10 was an American tank destroyer from the period of the Second World War. It came about on the chassis of the Sherman medium tank and carried an open welded turret with a counterweight at the rear and a 76.2 mm gun. The open top of the turret gave the crew a better view, but did not protect them from shrapnel. The tank destroyer doctrine assumed that the vehicle would sacrifice armor in favor of firepower and mobility. The mid production series differs from the early vehicles in details of the hull, the turret and the stowage of equipment, which are exactly the areas where photo-etched accessories do the most good. The open turret also means that the inside of the model is visible, so it pays to give the detail more attention than on a closed tank.

Usage and painting tips

Cut the photo-etched parts on a hard surface with a sharp tool and fold them in a bender or between two razor blades. Use cyanoacrylate in the smallest possible amount, or solder. Degrease the metal before painting and brush on a metal primer. On a vehicle with an open turret, finish and paint the inside before you fit the upper parts, as it is hard to get at afterwards. You will create the weathering with a wash in the engraving and with light drybrushing on the edges; dust and mud pigments suit the fenders.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of American Second World War vehicles in 1:35
  • Modelers who are bothered by the exaggerated thickness of plastic fenders and grilles
  • Anyone interested in a diorama with a tank destroyer in action
  • More advanced modelers with experience of photo-etched parts

This is an accessory set for advanced modelers. It does not hold a model or a kit, and glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. The package holds photo-etched metal parts only. The plastic model has to be owned already or obtained separately.

The M10 has an open turret, so the inside of the vehicle is visible, and a number of thin sheet-metal items on the hull. It is exactly there that plastic looks oversized and metal solves it.

A sharp scalpel or sheet-metal shears, a hard surface, tweezers, cyanoacrylate glue and preferably a photo-etch bender. Without a bender two razor blades will help.

Degrease the parts first and apply a primer meant for metal. Only then paint them. Without a primer the paint cracks and flakes off on smooth metal.
