A detailing set in photo-etched metal in 1:35 scale for a model of the German King Tiger heavy tank in the form with what is called the Henschel turret, that is the production type of turret with a flat front wall. The set replaces those plastic parts on which the oversized thickness is most obvious: the fenders, the grilles over the engine bay, the loops, the tool clamps and the small external equipment. On a vehicle of such large dimensions the difference shows at once. It is not a kit of the tank but an addition to one.
The King Tiger, in German the Königstiger, was the heaviest German tank in series production in the Second World War. It combined heavily sloped armor with a long 88 mm gun, thanks to which it could destroy opponents at great distances. Its high weight, however, put a strain on the drivetrain and limited both mobility and range. The first examples built carried a turret with a characteristically rounded front wall, while the vast majority of production vehicles received a simpler turret with a flat front, which in modeling is referred to as the Henschel turret.
Work from the large parts to the small ones: the fenders first and the fine grilles only at the end of the build. Cut the original plastic rendering off and sand the surface. Long bends can only be managed by a photo-etch bending tool. Degrease the metal and glue it with cyanoacrylate glue in spots, or with epoxy on long edges; a base coat for metal is necessary. The large area of the hull and the turret invites flat painting, but on the King Tiger of all vehicles it pays to layer the camouflage scheme, emphasize the engraved detail with a dark wash, run drybrushing along the edges and add dust in the places where it would realistically settle. Metal fenders will in addition take a suggested dent from the terrain.
This is an accessory photo-etched set, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
