An injection-molded plastic kit of the submarine HMS Meteorite in 1:350 scale from Mikromir. It is a small kit with fine surface detail, and the package is supplemented by photo-etched metal (deck and propeller) and decals. HMS Meteorite was originally the German experimental Type XVII submarine, which the Royal Navy took over after the Second World War and tested under that very name.
The Type XVII was a small coastal submarine with what is known as air-independent propulsion. It was driven by a Walter turbine burning fuel with highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide, thanks to which it could run submerged at a very high speed for short periods without a supply of air. After the German surrender several of these boats reached the Allies; one of the hulls was taken over by the Royal Navy, renamed HMS Meteorite and used to evaluate this promising but operationally delicate technology.
Cut the small parts off carefully and clean them up, and bond the photo-etched metal with super glue (cyanoacrylate). The hull can be built as a full hull for mounting on a stand. Apply a primer before painting and lay the colors down with an airbrush; on submarines, discreet accentuation of rivets and welds and light weathering around the waterline work well.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
