These are self-adhesive masks pre-cut to the outline of the deck areas, not a ship model. The Type 052D destroyer is a modern vessel, so what is masked here is not a wooden deck but the non-slip areas and other differently colored areas on a metal deck. On modern ships these usually differ in both shade and texture, and their exact outline is the hardest part of the painting. The cut of the masks matches the Bronco NB5040 kit, so check the match before buying.
The non-slip areas on the deck of a modern destroyer have firmly set shapes that follow the layout of the deck, and the eye finds them on a model at once. Tape cut by hand almost always looks inaccurate on them. Pre-cut masks solve that problem directly. Spray the base shade of the deck first, let it cure, stick the masks on and go over with a thin coat of a darker or more matte shade. If you want the non-slip to differ in texture as well, add a very fine matting agent to the paint and spray from a greater distance, so that the surface roughens slightly.
Test the tack of the mask first on an offcut of sprue or on a spot that does not show, above all if you are spraying onto acrylic. Lay the mask in one movement from one edge, so that no air is left underneath, and press the perimeter down with a blunt toothpick. Spray at right angles and in thin coats. Once it is off, go over the edges with a magnifier and correct any creep with a sharp-tipped brush. Take the masks off sooner rather than later; after several days the paint sets over the edge and flakes off.
