Twelve turned metal barrels for the main artillery of the Japanese battleships of the Kongo, Ise and Fuso classes in 1:350 scale. A replacement for the plastic barrels from a kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The main armament of the Japanese battleships of the Kongo, Ise and Fuso classes consisted of guns of fourteen-inch caliber, that is roughly 356 millimeters, in the form designated Type 41. The abbreviation L45 gives the length of the barrel expressed in calibers, not the caliber itself. On a model it is precisely the barrels that give away the quality of a build at once: they have to be straight, of equal length and they have to have a hollow muzzle.
Twelve turned metal barrels in 1:350 scale. Turning allows a precise axis and a smooth cylindrical surface with none of the parting traces that have to be laboriously sanded away on plastic barrels. The muzzle is genuinely drilled out, so you do not have to drill the barrels afterwards.
Cut the plastic barrels off as close to the turret as possible and carefully widen the opening left behind with a drill to the diameter of the pin of the metal barrel. Try the seating dry and check that all the barrels in one turret make the same angle; a differing elevation shows on a finished model at first glance. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and where the seating is looser, rather with a two-part glue. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a base color, otherwise the coat will come away during handling. Fit the barrels only at the close of the build so that they do not bend during the work.
The set suits modelers who are building one of the classes of battleship named and want to remove the most conspicuous weakness of injection-molded plastic. The work is undemanding and the result is visible at once. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
