An injection-molded plastic kit of the American nuclear attack submarine USS L. Mendel Rivers (SSN-686) in 1:350 scale from Mikromir. The model captures the lengthened hull version of the Sturgeon class boat. The box is completed by a photo-etched sheet (among other things the blades of the propeller) and decals with hull numbers for several boats of this class, so you can build another unit as well.
The Sturgeon was a numerous class of American nuclear attack submarines of the Cold War, developed as an improvement of the previous Thresher/Permit class. It was marked by a taller and bulkier sail and was somewhat larger than its predecessors. The Sturgeon boats served for decades and some of them were modified for special operations, among other things by carrying an add-on container (the Dry Deck Shelter) for deploying divers.
The hull can be built as a full hull for a stand. Glue the photo-etched propeller blades and the small parts with a cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) and clean up the mold seam lines on the smooth hull carefully. Apply a primer before painting; on modern submarines a flat black to anthracite works well, with discreet emphasis of the hatches and the seams. Keep the surface of the hull smooth, because on such a uniform shape every unevenness shows.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
