Decals 1:48 for two Boeing B-17E flying laboratories that tested flight at great altitudes for Boeing. Both carried the inscription Nemesis of Aeroembolism.
Responsibility details are not available.
At the start of the 1940s Boeing needed to know what flight at an altitude above ten thousand meters would do to a crew. In cooperation with the aero medical laboratory at Wright Field it set aside several Fortresses of version B-17E for that and sent them to the Californian airfield at Muroc Field. It is to exactly these machines that the sheet is devoted.
The first is a B-17E with the serial number 41-2407, marked with the number 13. Once the trials were over it went in August 1946 to the storage area at Davis Monthan. The second, B-17E 41-2399 with the number 7, ended up at Stillwater in September 1945. Both carried on the fuselage an explanatory inscription about being the nemesis of altitude sickness, that is, of the gas bubbles in the blood that threaten a crew during a rapid climb.
You get one printed sheet in 1:48 proportion. It is not a kit and not a set of parts but markings that are applied to a finished model. Besides the prominent inscriptions and numbers, the sheet also contains smaller accompanying elements for both aircraft.
Long texts on the side of the fuselage break easily, so it is advisable to work with plenty of water and with a soft brush. After soaking, let the film swell for a while away from the model and only then carry it across. A dried inscription takes decal softener, which draws it into the rivets and the transitions between panels.
The program the two airframes served in is not among the famous chapters of the war, yet out of it grew the practice on which today's high-altitude flying rests. Only after these trials was it known how long a crew may breathe pure oxygen, when a slow climb is necessary and what trouble threatens during a sharp descent. A model with these markings therefore tells of an aircraft that carried measuring instruments instead of bombs.
