This plastic kit from the American manufacturer Minicraft captures the Beechcraft T-34 Mentor trainer in the T-34A version. The model is supplied to be glued and sprayed.
The T-34 Mentor is a single-engine piston trainer that came about by adapting a civil touring type from the same company. The designers kept the proven wing and the nosewheel landing gear but replaced the passenger cabin with tandem seating, two places one behind the other under a long canopy. The result was a machine that was cheap to operate, easy to handle and yet lively enough for a student to grasp both the basics of flying and aerobatics. The T-34A version was intended for the US Air Force, where it replaced older training types. Mentors entered service in many other countries and a number of them still fly today in civil hands.
The long glazed canopy is the main theme on this type. It pays to invest time in the interior of both cabins, because it will be visible. Mask the canopy frame with cut tape or with a ready-made mask, otherwise it will give you trouble. Glue the fuselage with thin plastic cement, sand the joints and restore the engraving. Trainers often wear glossy finishes and large conspicuous warning areas, so spray in thin coats to keep the surface smooth; polish out any imperfections with a fine sanding sponge and a compound. Apply a gloss coat under the decals and, once it has dried, even the surface out according to how well kept you want the machine to be. Keep the weathering restrained, as training aircraft tend to be well maintained.
