The real subject

The Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet is a single-seat carrier-based combat aircraft of the US Navy. It is based on the smaller Hornet but is considerably larger and heavier, with distinctive angular leading-edge air intakes and a large cockpit canopy. It has been in service since the turn of the millennium and is among the most frequently built contemporary carrier aircraft, so it is worth doing the glazing and the color demarcations carefully on it.

What the masking set solves

Canopy frames are hard to outline with a brush. The line wanders, paint runs onto the glass and the repair usually turns out worse than the original mistake. The pre-cut templates have the shape of the individual areas, so all you have to do is lift them off the sheet, seat them in place and press them down. The frame then comes out the same width along its whole length and the edge stays sharp. The extent of the set and the layout of the individual parts are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

How to use the masks

• wash and degrease the clear parts first and let them dry perfectly
• lift the templates off the sheet with the tip of a scalpel or with tweezers, not with your fingers
• seat them dry and press them down with a toothpick, above all all the way around
• the masks go on before spraying, not once the paint has dried
• spray thin coats, as a heavy coat creeps under the edge of the template
• lift the template off while the paint has only just dried and pull it back at an angle
