This is not a kit of the tank but a set of photo-etched parts which the Czech maker Hauler cut for the plastic model of the British Crusader Mk.III cruiser tank in 1:48 scale given in the name of the product. The photo-etch replaces those parts that an injection mold molds needlessly thick or merely suggests: thin plates, mesh, brackets and grab handles. The result is a model that stands up to a close look.
The Crusader was a British cruiser tank of the Second World War with running gear sprung by the Christie system, a low silhouette and, for its day, a high speed. The Mk.III version got a 57 mm gun in the turret instead of the weaker armament of the previous versions, and it was committed in North Africa. Characteristic features of the vehicle are the long fenders and the exposed running gear with large road wheels.
The long fenders and covers are among the parts that are hardest to bend. Annealing helps: pass the metal briefly through a flame, let it cool and only then shape it - it stops springing back and holds a curve. Run the bend along the etched line, ideally in a bender. Desert camouflage calls for working in layers: after the base color, apply thin translucent filters and dust shades from the bottom upwards, so that the lower part of the vehicle is lighter and dustier than the upper surfaces. Photo-etched metal has to get a base coat before painting, or the paint will flake off at the first handling.
