A 1:48 decal sheet for two A-26B Invader attack bombers of the 671st Squadron, 416th Bomb Group.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Douglas A-26 reached the front only at the end of the war, but it brought a combination that older types did not offer: a speed close to that of fighters, a decent bomb load and remotely operated defensive turrets. The B subversion had a solid nose fitted with a battery of heavy machine guns, so it could first suppress the target with fire and only then cover it with bombs. What the crews valued most about it was that it let them stay over enemy territory for only a short time.
Both sets of markings on the sheet come from the 671st Bomb Squadron of the 416th Bomb Group, which supported the advance of the ground units from French and Belgian airfields. One of the machines carried a nose painting with the name Dinah Might, the other a period nickname referring to the girl's name Maggie. The serial numbers of both aircraft are given in the item description, so their fates can be traced as well.
The flat surfaces of the Invader's fuselage make the work easier, yet it still pays to apply the designs over a gloss base and to use a softening solution where they cross rows of rivets. Once dry, check against the light that no bubble has been trapped anywhere and, if it has, pierce it with the tip of a scalpel.
From a modeler's point of view the Invader is pleasant in having fairly clean shapes and few protrusions, so it is easy to work on with an airbrush. Its late service also means the machines tended to be fairly new and well kept, and exaggerated weathering would look out of place on them.
