Decals for eight test Phantoms from the Californian test base, among them the machine on which Chuck Yeager ended his military career.
Responsibility details are not available.
Aircraft intended for trials looked different from combat machines. They carried conspicuous orange and white bands so that the cameras on the ground and the escort machines could pick them out reliably, measuring probes on the nose and often non-standard equipment that nobody in a line squadron ever saw. Phantoms of exactly that kind are the subjects of this sheet.
Eight options include two-seat as well as reconnaissance versions modified for test purposes. The best known of them is the pre-production machine on which the famous pilot who broke the sound barrier made his last flight in the uniform of the US Air Force, and which carries the name of his legendary rocket aircraft. The same machine appears on the sheet a second time, in its later form with a shark mouth on the nose. One of the machines included served as an escort aircraft during trials of cruise missiles.
What the sheet contains and what it does not. These are the decals alone in 1:48 scale; the model is bought separately. A gloss intermediate coat is recommended before applying them, decal softener once they have set and finally a flat or semi-gloss overcoat depending on the particular machine. The prominent bands are better applied as a decal, because their breaks around the fuselage transitions are very hard to find with masking. White areas need a light base, otherwise they show through.
