About product

Mikromir 1:48 Fokker G-IA Reconnaissance Version - an aircraft kit

A kit of the Dutch twin-engined Fokker G.I aircraft in the G-IA form in 1:48 scale from the maker Mikromir, in the reconnaissance version. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The Fokker G.I is a subject that mainstream makers practically pass over, so this is a welcome chance to get a machine with a very characteristic silhouette into a display case.

The real subject

The Fokker G.I was a Dutch twin-engined aircraft of the late 1930s with an unusual arrangement: a central nacelle with the crew and engines placed on the leading edge of the wing, from which two tail booms ran back, joined by a horizontal tail surface. The designation G-IA refers to the form with radial engines used by the Dutch Air Force, as against the smaller variant with a different powerplant. The reconnaissance form differed from the standard one in its equipment and in an alteration to the forward part of the nacelle. The structure was mixed, combining metal and wooden elements with covering.

Building and painting tips

Twin booms call for discipline: glue the assembly of the wing, the engine nacelles and both booms on one flat surface and keep checking the angles from every side, because with this arrangement a twist cannot be put right later. Fit the tail surface only once the booms have cured, again with a check against a template. Keep the engines and the exhausts separate and paint them apart, as the nacelles are hard to reach once glued. Mask the glazed forward part of the nacelle with tape or with ready-made masks; a sharp transition of the frames makes half the final impression on this machine. Given the short-run mold, reckon on having to level the mating surfaces and dry-fit several times. Fit the landing gear and the propellers toward the end.

Who the model is for

  • anyone interested in European aviation of the late 1930s
  • modelers who collect unconventional twin-boom designs
  • builders looking for a subject outside the usual offering in 1:48 scale
  • more experienced modelers used to short-run kits

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It differed in its equipment and in an alteration to the forward part of the central nacelle. The particular extent of the differences is covered by the instructions enclosed with the kit.

Rather not. The assembly of the twin booms calls for accuracy, and a short-run mold means easing the mating surfaces and dry-fitting repeatedly.

A central nacelle with the crew and two tail booms running back from the engine nacelles, joined by a horizontal tail surface.

The contents of the package are not stated here. Masks can be bought separately.
