A large injection-molded plastic kit of the four-engine Focke-Wulf Fw 200C-4 Condor in 1:48 scale from Trumpeter. Thanks to its great span, around 69 cm, this is an exceptionally striking display model. The box holds gray plastic parts, clear parts for the glazing and a decal sheet; the actual contents follow the current boxing. The model has a well-worked interior, separate control surfaces and external stores, so it is a more demanding but rewarding project.
The Fw 200 Condor was originally built as a long-range airliner and during the Second World War it was converted into a German four-engine long-range maritime patrol aircraft and bomber. With four air-cooled radial engines and a long range it patrolled over the Atlantic, directed submarines onto Allied convoys and attacked them itself, which earned it the nickname Scourge of the Atlantic. The C-4 is one of the later combat versions, with radar and heavier armament. Because the airframe had civil origins the structure was sensitive to overloading, yet the Condor was among the most feared opponents of Allied shipping.
Finish and paint the cockpit and the interior first, because once the fuselage is closed there is no access to them. The glazing is extensive, so masking tape or masks pay off and the frames are best touched in by hand. Assemble and shade the engines and propellers separately, and only then fit them into the nacelles. On a model this large, make sure the wing-to-fuselage joint is firmly bonded, and reinforce it if needed. Fit the external stores and the radar aerials at the very end. An airbrush is ideal for the finish, typically a maritime scheme in shades of gray and green; pick out the panel lines with a wash.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
