A cut self-adhesive mask for the model of the fighter F-86F Sabre in 1:48 scale. The EXPERT designation is the highest equipment grade in this range, so the set is wider than both the basic and the middle version and covers further masked surfaces of the model besides the glazing.

Sprayed markings instead of decals

The Sabre is often built in a natural metal finish, and it is on a polished surface that a decal is hardest to hide. The carrier film of a decal creates a slightly matte patch around the motif that not even a good softener will level out completely. Markings sprayed through a mask remove that problem, because the paint lies directly on the surface with no extra layer at all. The reward is a completely flat transition and a reflection of light that nowhere gives the edge of a decal away.

Recommended procedure

First finish the base coat and let it cure thoroughly, ideally overnight. Then lay the mask on the finished surface, press it down and go over the edges with a fingernail or a stick. Lay the paint on in several very thin coats, rather on the dry side, because a deep wet application is the main cause of creep. Before you start spraying the canopy, check that the frames are not standing up anywhere. Remove the mask shortly after the paint has set, pulling at an angle to the side rather than straight up.
