About product

The hunter that could see at night as well

Carrier aviation of the 1950s needed a machine able to hit a target the pilot could not see with the naked eye. It was exactly for this that the all-weather versions of the Demon family came about: they received a radar in the nose, the matching fire control equipment and an armament of guided missiles. The nose of the aircraft therefore looks bulkier than on the day variants and the whole forward fuselage is shaped around the antenna. This form of the type served the US Navy until the moment a twin-engine successor with a two-man crew replaced it.

The contents of the sheet

Two markings are offered. The first belongs to a machine of the all-weather night version from VF-122, and besides the serial number the source gives a code made up of the number on the nose and the two letters of the air wing. The second captures an aircraft of VF-21 in 1959, when the squadron served on the deck of the Midway. Here too both identification numbers are available, so the option can be traced in the specialist literature without difficulty.

Which kits it suits

The sheet is not tied to the product of a single company. In 1:48 scale this type was released by several brands and the dimensions of the national insignia and the numbers correspond to the real size on the machine, so the elements will cope with any model of the same scale. It is only worth comparing the position of the numbers with the documentation of the chosen kit in advance, because the shape of the vertical tail surface differs slightly between releases.

Recommended procedure

The most sensitive place is usually the transition from the glossy upper finish to the light lower surface, through which the lengthwise marking line passes. Divide it into shorter sections and settle each one separately, because a single long strip will curl while being positioned and cannot be straightened again. A drop of decal softener helps under the elements on the rounded nose, but strictly after drying, never into a wet film.

FAQ

Two. For both the serial number and the fuselage code are given, and for one also the parent carrier and the year.

Yes, these are different squadrons and different machines. Both sheets are sold separately and do not overlap.

A variant with a radar in the nose intended for combat in poor visibility and at night. Its nose therefore has a bulkier shape.

Only after the element has dried completely. It is not put into a wet film, which would wrinkle and could no longer be straightened.
