This is not an aircraft model but a set of masking stencils for a Me 163 B model in 1:48 scale. The masks are cut from vinyl, that is, from a flexible self-adhesive film that can be stretched over rounded shapes and holds better on doubly curved areas than a stiff carrier. The extent of the set — that is, whether it covers the cockpit, the wheels, the national insignia or the camouflage pattern — is stated on the packaging. Before buying, check that the set matches the kit you are building.
The Me 163 B was a rocket-powered interceptor with a tailless layout, that is, without a conventional horizontal tail. It was powered by a rocket engine running on liquid propellants and the time under power was very short — once the fuel was used up, the machine carried on as a glider. The aircraft took off from a jettisonable wheeled dolly and landed on a retractable skid under the fuselage, which is its most striking technical feature and at the same time a detail worth working out carefully on a model.
Let the area under the mask dry thoroughly and free it of dust and grease before applying it. Lay the mask in place with tweezers and press the edges down with a toothpick, so that no gap is left anywhere. Spray the paint in several thin coats at right angles to the surface — a heavy coat and spraying at an angle are the most frequent causes of paint running under the edge. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has set, pulling it at a sharp angle so that it does not take the paintwork with it. With vinyl, do not overdo the stretching, otherwise a shifted shape will show once it is off.
The set is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
