About product

Merlin Mk.66 - a British aircraft engine in 1:48 scale (CMK, resin)

The set cast in resin from the maker CMK represents the British liquid-cooled twelve-cylinder Rolls-Royce Merlin in the Mk.66 version in 1:48 scale. It serves two uses: either you build it into a model with the cowling removed, or you set it up on its own as an accessory for a workshop scene. The model of the aircraft is not included in the package.

The real subject

The Merlin is a liquid-cooled V12 that powered a large part of British aircraft of the Second World War. The Mk.66 version is among the standards with a two-stage supercharger and was used in later fighters. For a modeler it is interesting above all for its mechanical side: a compact block, exhaust manifolds along the sides of the heads, an engine mount of tubes and dense wiring and plumbing, which with the cowling open make up most of what is visible.

Preparing the plastic before fitting

If you are installing the engine into a model, count on the plastic kit being solid inside. First remove the original fillings and suggestions of the bulkhead from the engine compartment, then thin the edges of the cowling parts from the inside, as otherwise the engine will not fit between them and the seam will open. Sand gradually and keep checking the depth with a dry test, that is by bringing the cowling together with the engine inserted without glue. Only when the whole seats can you glue with cyanoacrylate glue. Wash the castings free of the release agent first and cut the casting blocks off with a saw. The engine is better painted taken apart: finish the base, the metallic shades and a wash in the recesses before you install it in place.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of models with the engine section exposed
  • Modelers who are building a workshop diorama or a display case scene
  • More experienced builders, as resin is cut, sanded and glued differently from plastic

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. The casting can be set up on a base or in a workshop scene, and then there is no need to cut into the kit at all.
