An add-on photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard in 1:48 scale for detailing the cockpit of the P-51D-5 Mustang fighter. It holds parts of thin etched metal that replace the simplified plastic elements of the pilot's compartment, above all the instrument panel, the side panels, the levers and the seat harness. The set is not an aircraft kit and cannot be built on its own; it serves to raise the detail of a model you already have.
The North American P-51D Mustang was an American single-seat fighter of the Second World War, powered by a license-built Merlin V12 engine. The D version differs from the earlier ones in the bubble canopy that gave the pilot an all-round view, and it was the most widespread variant of the type. The D-5 block belongs to the early production of the D version. Thanks to the glazing the Mustang's cockpit is clearly visible, which is why it pays to give it attention on models of this type.
Separate the parts with a scalpel on a hard surface and fold them in a bender; the metal breaks easily but does not like being straightened back. Try the part dry before gluing it in; on cockpits the plastic original usually has to be sanded down first, so that the etched part does not enlarge the dimensions and the canopy still seats. It is glued with super glue applied with a pin, and wipe any excess away at once. Degrease unpainted surfaces first and lay down a primer. The seat harness comes alive if, once painted, it is gently stretched and waved so that it drapes over the seat and does not look like flat sheet metal.
This is an add-on set, not a model kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
