A decal sheet in 1:48 scale for the Soviet Polikarpov I-16 fighter, known by the nickname Rata. Intended for a model; the aircraft itself is not in the package.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Polikarpov I-16 was a radical machine for its day. It appeared in the first half of the 1930s as one of the first production fighters to have both a cantilever wing and retractable landing gear, and the pilot retracted that gear by hand with a crank. The fuselage was short and cylindrical, the engine radial, and the aircraft was known for its exceptional agility as well as for forgiving few mistakes; the instability that came with the short fuselage turned flight testing into a test of skill. It was given the nickname Rata by its opponents in the Spanish Civil War, while Soviet airmen called it something else. It served in Spain, in the Far East and still in the first months of the fighting of 1941. The name of the sheet points to the period term for Soviet airmen, who were called Stalin's Falcons.
Decals in 1:48 scale for building a model of the I-16. How many marking variants the sheet carries and which machines they belong to is given in the instructions supplied with the sheet.
The sheet is a classic wet decal. Cut the subject out closely, dip it in lukewarm water for a few seconds and wait until the film releases from the paper on its own. Coat the surface with gloss varnish beforehand so that the decal clings over its whole area. A decal softener settles the film into engraved lines and over the curves of the short fuselage; once it has dried, go over it with varnish in the sheen you want.
For modelers of the Soviet Air Force in 1:48 scale. The package holds a decal sheet; the aircraft model, the paints and the varnish do not belong to it, unless stated otherwise.
