About product

PZL.43 A Chayka in 1:48 scale from Mirage Hobby

The kit captures the export version of the Polish single-engine light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft in the equipment of the Bulgarian Air Force in the period from 1941 to 1944. The model is intended to be glued and painted, and in 1:48 scale it offers plenty of room for working up the cockpit, the engine section and the characteristic landing gear in aerodynamic fairings. Mirage Hobby is a Polish manufacturer specializing in Polish subjects. The contents of the package are given in the instructions supplied with the kit.

The real subject

The type derived from the design of the light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft PZL.23 Karas, that is, a high-wing monoplane with fixed landing gear and a crew consisting of a pilot, an observer and a gunner. The export version PZL.43 received a more powerful Gnome-Rhone radial engine and different shaping of the nose. The machines went to Bulgaria, where the nickname Chayka, meaning seagull, caught on for them. In Bulgarian service they served in the training and reconnaissance role until the middle of the 1940s.

Building and painting tips

The model has a glazed cockpit and a lower station, so deal with the interior before you close the fuselage. It is worth bringing out the seats, the instrument panel and the frame structure with a dark wash and a dry brush. With older molds, expect to dry fit, fill the gaps with filler and sand them. The landing gear fairings form a pronounced outline, so pay attention to seating them accurately. Apply the camouflage with an airbrush from the darker shades to the lighter ones and keep the transitions soft. Spray gloss varnish before the decals, unify the surface with a matte one once it has dried and add restrained chipping on the leading edges.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of interwar and early wartime subjects in 1:48 scale
  • Those interested in the Polish school of aircraft design
  • Modelers who collect less common types and markings
  • More experienced builders who are not afraid of a little filling

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is an export development of the light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft PZL.23 Karas with a more powerful radial engine and a modified nose.

It is the Bulgarian name for the machine, meaning seagull. The type was commonly referred to by that name in Bulgarian service.

More for a modeler with some experience. With kits of this kind a dry fit and a little filling of the seams pay off.
